A Pupil-centred Curriculum
Our curriculum is designed to be for the pupils and of the pupils' needs. It is based around the principle of pupil empowerment. We do not see learning as a transfer of knowledge from teacher to child (although this is part of it). We see it as an ongoing experience whereby children are equipped with the knowledge, skills and understanding that they need in order to be life long learners. Necessary to this achieving this, is the ability for children to have the ability to sociaize and communicate with a large range of different people.
As part of our pupil-centred curriculum, we support the personal, social and emotional development of our children. At Blue Coat Primary School we use the Jigsaw PSHE curriculum.
"With strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health, Jigsaw 3-11 properly equips schools to deliver engaging and relevant PSHE within a whole-school approach. Jigsaw lessons also include mindfulness allowing children to advance their emotional awareness, concentration and focus."
But supporting our children's PSHE and wellbeing goes beyond the remit of a lesson or even a subject. The pedagogy of our teachers is designed around personal empowerment, encouraging children to work closely with each other as an integral part of their learning experience. It is also enhanced by our children experiencing Forest School and their play, where they work and learn together.
The wellbeing of our children is of the utmost importance to us. Future readiness involves being given the tools to help to recognise emotions and tackle difficult situations. We do this in a number of ways. Firstly, all children are supported by our Jigsaw, mindful curriculum. We have also used emotion coaching training to enhance our pedagogy and transfer skills to children. We also identify children who may need some additional need quickly. We work with counsellors and other professionals to support those children and their families to work through their feelings.
We recognise that at Blue Coat Primary School, there is less diversity than in some other communities. Whilst we celebrate our school and Wotton under Edge more widely, we also are aware that our children will become part of a wonderful multi-cultural and diverse society. As such, we have designed our curriculum to ensure that inclusivity is a major part. We regularly welcome visitors from different faiths and backgrounds in order to help our children understand and celebrate diversity.
