Do we really need to do SATS?

SATS are tests that year 6' s have to do at the end of their primary school days, but are they really beneficial or are they just a waste of time and money? But with all controversial arguments there are two sides to it.

Indicator of Knowledge

My first point in favour of this argument, that I would like to state, is that doing SATS will give you an indicator of how how much you already know. So that when you go to secondary school you will know what groups to go in so that you can learn more - this would mean you will do better in the future.

Test taking

Secondly, children will have to get used to tests and exams; in secondary school they will sit tests regularly, furthermore, kids will find exams less petrifying! So will have more chance of doing well.

Time and Money

Personally I think one of the reasons why SATS are not beneficial is that primary schools have to spend so much time revising for SATS that they don't do any normal lessons, also schools will have to spend a fortune buying all the equipment to help year 6's to prepare. consequently they won't have as much money to buy other things for the curriculum lessons.

Another point not in favour of this argument is that children will get extremely worried that they won't do well, so in school they will create a negative atmosphere. Furthermore they probably won't do as well as they should.

Taking all these points into consideration, I can state that if we are to carry on with SATS the bad points into mind.
