Introducing... balanced arguments!

In Literacy lessons this week we have started to look at balanced arguments. We have made an initial attempt at writing our own, we’ve then looked at high quality examples to help us pick out the features that make them successful, before reflecting on our own first piece. We've taken some important steps to improve our writing in this genre.

However, in order to make further progress I am challenging us all to write (before Friday 2nd) an introductory paragraph to a balanced argument. Here’s mine:

Should primary school children walk to school?

It is reported that fewer primary-aged children (between 5-11 years old) walk to school now than ever before. In fact, many boys and girls leave primary school never having made their own way to or from their school. Carefully conducted medical research suggests that regular walking could have an all important role to play in the health of our nation. However, this also needs to be balanced against genuine concerns about young children’s safety.

It doesn't need to be very long! Don't spend much longer than 20 minutes crafting your sentences. Here are a few pointers to make sure you do this well:

1) Choose a topic that interests you.
2) Start with a statement of the issue and an overview of the arguments.
3) Use some technical language.
3) Use a connective.

I look forward to reading your posts - let's get blogging!

Do Cats Make Good Pets?
Some people say that cats do not make good pets, and that dogs are better than cats. Is this true? Well, not everyone thinks this. There are plenty of happy cat owners who will say that cats are the best pets in the world. There must be more to this argument than either side thinks. This is what I found out….

Would you rather have a motorbike or a car?
Motorbikes are cheaper to buy than your average car, cheaper to run and cheaper to repair, but in a busy world is a normal car more practical getting around? Cars are more comfortable, safer and ideal for exciting family trips out, however both vehicles, unless you have an electric car or motorbike, are polluting this planet, so is the most environmentally friendly option just to walk, or cycle?
