First Week Back

Firstly, thank you to those parents who helped the class walk down to the church on Wednesday. I hope you enjoyed the service; I know that the children did.

This week started off with a bang, with our topic launch day. The children produced some lovely firework paintings, adding glitter and sequins for extra effect. They had a go at writing some firework poetry, and sequenced the story of Guy Fawkes and the gunpowder plot. We then had great fun building bonfires and Guys. In the afternoon, in P.E the children began thinking about ideas for a firework dance. After that, they made delicious edible sparklers, which went down a treat before playtime! Photos to follow shortly.

Carrying on with our celebrations topic, in English we wrote recounts of how a little girl called Evelyn got ready for the Sing-Sing Festival. Evelyn lives in Papua New Guinea. Perhaps the children can remember the order in which she got ready for her festival and can give you an oral recount. Next week we will continue with recount writing and start to add more description and detail to events.

In maths we have been looking at division. Some children have been sharing into equal groups and some have been investigating remainders. We have had a real focus on investigations and problem solving this week. I have been so impressed with the children’s ability to recognise patterns and to apply these to other problems they have encountered. We will continue to look at division next week.

Spellings – I will check the year 2s progress on Monday (as I do every week), and I will see how the year 1s are getting on this Friday. However, please make sure the children have their spelling sheet in their book bag every day.
