Pre-School Newsletter February 2015

Happy Belated New Year everyone!  Christmas and the holidays are a distant memory and we are well into the Spring term and settled back into our routines. We would like to welcome families who are new to the setting and hope that you have a rewarding time with us.

If you need to know anything, please ask a staff member and remember that there is lots of information available on the website (www.bluecoatprimary.com) under the Pre-School button) or if you prefer we have paper copies of the policies and procedures available in the kitchen area which you are welcome to consult.

Christmas

thankyouThank you from the staff for all the lovely presents and cards that we received, they are greatly appreciated.

We hope that you liked the cards and decorations that your children made and also enjoyed their nativity performance. I would like to thank the Parent Fundraising Group for providing presents for the children and paying for Liz Martin to rehearse and lead our performances. As usual we gave one performance to you the families, but we also went to Dryleaze Court sheltered housing which is always a lovely occasion. A final thank you goes to Mary Buckley the school Bursar who made the mince pies which were served at the nativity.

Volunteering

We are a charity and run by volunteers so if there is a request for helpers, or tea towel washing etc, please try to help in whatever way you can. As with all big jobs, if everyone did something small to contribute then it would get done easily, however when left to just a few it can become a burden. Thanks.

School premises

scooterThe school has asked us to remind parents, of the following: that cars should not come on to the school premises unless you are collecting a sick child.  Please could you let anyone who may be collecting your child (eg grandparents or childminders) know that this is the case.

Scooters should not be ridden in the school grounds but pushed from the gate onwards.

Finally, please could dogs be left at the main gate and not brought into school.

Dads!

Did you know that there is a Dads group which meets on the first Saturday of the month, usually at Treetops Childrens Centre in Dursley.  This is for all Dads living in this area with children under 8.  Various activities are organised, for which there is a small charge for example on the 7th February a Wellie Walk is happening with a cost of £3 per family. It is necessary to book if you are going. More information can be found on the noticeboard outside Pre-School or by looking at the Children’s Centre facebook page.

Medicine

If your child has to take prescription medicine during Pre-School hours there are two ways of doing this. The first is that you can come into the setting to give your child the medicine needed or secondly you can bring the medicine in for the staff to give. If you choose the second option, there is a form to complete, giving all the information about dosage, time etc and also we need to have the medicine in its original packaging (ie with your child’s name on it.) If we do not have the medicine and paperwork as described staff are unable to administer medicine and you would be phoned to come into the setting to give the dose yourself. This is in line with the Department for Education & Department of Health guidelines.

Packed lunches

Please remember that we are a nut free setting (so no Nutella or peanut butter sandwiches please) and also that we cannot keep lunch boxes in a fridge so a small freezer block is a good idea to keep things fresh. Children can be put off by large portions so please consider putting a few crisps in a bag/pot instead of a whole packet, or cutting up large pieces of fruit into more manageable bite size chunks. Please could you name your child’s lunchbox as a number of them have the same design.

Outdoors

hat scarf mittensWe go outside everyday, so the children will need warm/waterproof clothing and gloves etc even if they travel to and from Pre-School by car. If your child walks to school in wellies, they can bring something to change into. Please name your child’s belongings.

Toggles

In an effort to stop the traffic jam of parents near the coat pegs we would like the children to come into the Toggles room by themselves after half term.  There will be staff on hand to help them take off coats and find pegs etc so please encourage your child to have a go at being independent. If you need to speak to staff or hand over letters etc, there will always be someone at the outside gate to do this.

Snow

If we have heavy snowfall and the school is unable to open, preschool will also be closed.  A note will be put on the website and also on www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/closedschools (who can be followed on twitter (@Glos_schools) www.glosclosedschools.co.uk and www.glosclosedschools.com. The three websites above all carry the same information, but are needed as one website can struggle with the demand if there is widespread disruption.

Keypersons

A few children have been allocated new keypersons (due to changes in the staff rota), if you have any queries, do please ask. Lists of key groups can be found in the noticeboard and also in photographic form in each room. Staff are happy to chat, particularly at the end of a session, or by phone if you have any particular concerns. Children attending more than one setting often have communication diaries to which we contribute and when granted parental permission we also ring the other setting to introduce ourselves.

Summer Term

Buttons parents – you will shortly receive a ‘Request for Sessions’ form for the Summer Term (to start after Easter break). We will be re-allocating the sessions to accommodate new children into Buttons.

Toggles parents - Toggles will continue with their current sessions in the Summer Term. We still have a few spaces on a Friday. Please contact Jo if you are interested in a Friday session.

Empty 2 Litre Milk Bottles

Staff are half way through building an igloo for the children out of milk bottles. They still need a few more to complete it. If you have any spare 2 litre bottles please pop them into pre-school. Many thanks.
