2 years of Mud Kitchen Magic

IMG 30452 years ago a small team of volunteers transformed an unloved and under-used area of the playground into Blue Coat's very own Mud Kitchen.

The Mud Kitchen has become one of our most popular and most used play spaces. It has been open every school day since its launch in Feb 2015, increasing our overall space for play.

It is home to our 'large loose parts' - tyres, planks, logs, tree stumps and pallets are reimagined every play time to create pirate ships, obstacle courses, dens, seesaws, stepping stones, desert islands, cars, hedgehog homes and more. Scrap from our Scrap Shed is integrated into the daily constructions, adding special features, hammocks, shelter, seating and surprises!

And of course, there are the pots and pans and the endless mixing of potions and mud pies, with added cherry blossom, autumn leaves, pines cones and freshly grated chalk dust.

Happy birthday Mud Kitchen - here's to many more years of great play.

Dengineering Zone - we need your votes!

DSCN2703

We are happy to announce that Blue Coat has made it through to another Tesco 'Bags of Help' shortlist. On Wednesday 1st Feb (coincidentally Global School Play Day!) voting will open for our 'Dengineering Zone' project.

The Dengineering Zone will be a construction play zone  on a currently blank corner of the school field. Children will be able to build outdoor dens and teepee structures with wood, ropes and tarpaulins. Depending on the level of funding that we secure through the voting, the zone may also include hammocks, a slack line and a large netted climbing structure.

Any purchase in Tesco during 1st-25th Feb will get you a voting token (no minimum spend). A voting box will be located near the tills. You can vote as many times during this period as you visit the store. Voting tokens are sometimes located in a little pot near the tills for you to help yourself to (rather than staff handing them out). Don't forget to pick them up!

First prize (project with most votes) is £5000, 2nd prize £2000, third prize £1000.

You can vote using tokens in the following Tesco stores:

WOTTON UNDER EDGE EXP   GL12 7BT
CAM-DURSLEY     GL11 5LE
NAILSWORTH STROUD EXP   GL6 0DU
STROUD  GL5 4AG
STROUD CHALFORD EXP     GL6 8DE

CIRENCESTER 1   GL7 1HW
CHESTRTN CIRNCSTR EXP   GL7 1XE

The Bags of Help initiative is supported by money from the five pence charge levied on single-use carrier bags in Tesco stores.

Please spread the word and help the school secure some funds to continue to develop our outdoor play opportunities for young people.

A playful Christmas

antler resizeWe've had a busy final week of term. Traditional Blue Coat Christmas events, such as Christmas lunch, Christingle in the hall and class parties, have been held alongside some new festive events.
We had outdoor Christmas trees in the playground for the first time, and a pupil-led decorating session. Wood coins, willow and pine cones were creatively combined with pipe cleaners, sequins, andwhole lot of red ribbon from the Children's Scrapstore! The process was lots of creative fun, the results were spectacular!

Outdoor play: autumn turns to winter

DSC00430Welcome back after Christmas!

We were blessed with beautiful autumn colour this year. The children took full advantage of the crisp and colourful leaves in the weeks when they were freshly fallen. Natural materials are free and fun, and help to more closely connect the children with our seasons and nature.

Play Coordinator wins national recognition

LOTCawardBlue Coat's Play Coordinator, Mrs Murray, was awarded the title of Inspiring Educator in the Outstanding Contribution to Learning Outside the Classroom awards last week.
Following a shortlisting of 4 by LOtC judges and then a public vote, Mrs Murray finished in first place and had her very own nerve-racking 'golden envelope' moment at the award ceremony!
