Future Ready Mathematics: A Meeting for Parents

math symbols mOn Tuesday evening, the school hall was packed with parents eager to find out more about the most challenging Maths curriculum faced by primary school pupils. The evening took parents through a series of items, including:

  • the aims of the new Maths curriculum
  • the principles underpinning these aims
  • the opportunities offered
  • the challenges posed
  • the standards of Mathematics expected of different age groups
  • how the school is striving for future readiness in maths
  • how parents can support at home

No maths evening would be complete without some mathematical 'interactions'. Parents waded through a series of problems aimed at demonstrating some of the principles that the children are now learning and being taught to master. [It wasn't quite as daunting though as we did introduce parents to the concept of a 'talk partner'!]

The evening was very well supported and we hoped that it answered some of the questions regarding Maths in school. We appreciate that it couldn't answer  every question and the school is working hard to provide answers (when we have them!) Clearly, with such support, we are thinking about meetings for the future that will bring parents into the picture in what is a rapidly changing landscape.

For parents unable to attend the meeting, please find a copy of the slideshow used below in .pdf format. At forthcoming parent consultations there will be spare handouts available from class teachers, in case they were missed.

A huge thank you to all in attendance, including our ever-loyal and helpful PTA.
