SW REGIONAL CHAMPIONS 2015-16: BC Girls' Football Reaches New Heights

IMG 9040It is with great pride that I write this article's title and announce the South-West Regional Girls' Football Champion of 2015-16 is Blue Coat!

Last Saturday, Blue Coat girls' football team visited Odd Down Sports Centre Bath to take part in the Danone sponsored regional championships. The grounds accommodated several high profile competitions (and a men's rugby match, just for variety!) so the occasion felt BIG as soon as you stepped into the crowded grounds.

Nevertheless, the girls kept their cool and battled through a series of group fixtures that saw them face the likes of (county champions of) Oxfordshire, Cornwall, Somerset and Dorset. In doing so, the girls maintained an undefeated tournament record with few goals passing goalkeeper, Rosie K, and her iron wall defenders. Goals steadily trickled through each game owing to the sharp attack led by Lena B, Zoe B and Imogen S. It was good enough for Blue Coat to win the group and commence to the semi-finals...

With such large scale organisation, gaps between games presented challenges for the girls to stay warm and focussed. Once again, the girls took these barriers in their stride and kept their eyes on the prize...

The semi-final followed and Devon put up a strong fight. Such was their determination, Blue Coat was taken to the wire with extra time and then a penalty shootout finish. Cool-headed goalkeeping and steel-nerved spot-kicking carried our girls through to the finals. Parental cheers and exhales of breath filled the air as the realisation of a place in the National Finals at Leicester City ground, King Power Stadium, became a certainty.

Not content on the title of 'runners-up', the girls stormed their final fixture against Dorset, digging deep for a 3-0 win to become undisputed regional champions.

Well done to all of the girls for their hard work, positive attitudes, and strong teamwork ethic. We're very proud of you and can't wait for the 22nd May to see you perform at a national level!

Sincere thanks to team coach Tom Needham who has both inspired and nurtured our Year 5 and 6 girls to the point of not losing a single game over 2015-16 in this competition and others.

Finally, thank you to parents and staff for your time and support in cheering on our champs!
