Blue Coat Boys Join Girls in County Cup Final

IMG 708914 boys. 12 teams. 5 pitches. 2 places awaiting in the county cup finals. 1 Blue Coat qualification then? Hmmm...

Yesterday afternoon saw two 7-a-side teams, comprising of a selection of our Milepost 3 boys, take to the artificial surfaces of Katherine Lady Berkeley's sports centre pitches in the hope of securing a group win to qualify them for the county cup finals.

Both teams had tough competition from Alexander Hosea school in Wickwar who put forth 2 strong teams. Nonetheless, both Blue Coat teams stepped up to the mark over their 3 fixtures. Blue Coat Team 2 secured a 3rd place, narrowly losing 0-1 to Blue Coat Team 1 and then an identical result with Alexander Hosea Team 1. The other Blue Coat team drew and won one of their matches to finish the group joint first with Alexander Hosea Team 1 based on both points and goal difference. Clearly, a decision had to be made as only one of the 'large schools' could progress to the county finals...

The boys summoned 3 of their players to take part in a courageous penalty shootout. Here is how the nerve-wracking event unfolded:

Penalty 1: Blue Coat, Rio - as comfortable in goal as out of it - takes Blue Coat's first penalty burying it deep in the net. The Hosea keeper didn't stand a chance.

Penalty 2: Hosea - their forward rockets the ball hard at Rio's goal, leaving him little to do but pick it out of the back of the net.

Penalty 3: Blue Coat, Barny - time to take the advantage back. Barny thunders the ball hard off the spot, passing the keeper who just can't get there in time.

Penalty 4: Hosea - it's all now on Rio. A save is needed for Blue Coat to build on Barny's hard fought penalty goal. A confident strike from the spot by Hosea but Rio keeps his cool, palming it down to the ground to give Blue Coat the advantage.

Penalty 5: Blue Coat, Jamie - time to seal the deal. The pressure mounts on the team's striker who has the weight of the county finals on his shoulders. The rest of the team have done their job... can Jamie too? Jamie launches the ball hard enough for him to take to the air with both feet and the sheer speed ensures that the ball sneaks beyond the grasp of the goalie. A Blue Coat victory!

Penalty 6: Hosea - Rio's pride. The team having now scored all of their penalties to Hosea's 1, Rio isn't content to be beaten from the spot again. The ball is leathered at Rio's goal but the talented keeper stretches to make the save and stands tall as one of the team's heroes of the moment. A brilliant Blue Coat example of holding nerve and staying focussed...

The Blue Coat performance now forwards the team to the next round of competition, the County Finals for large schools, on Thursday December 9th at Oxstalls Tennis Centre (4-6pm). They now join the girls as our second successive team making it to the county finals stage already this year. Well done to everyone taking part - all represented the school proudly and played some excellent football.

Special thanks to Mrs Bates for the event organisation and KLB for affording the boys the opportunity to compete at this impressive sports facility. Also, thank you to parents for assisting with transportation, especially Mr and Mrs McCuaig who stayed to cheer on our boys and lifted them from the sidelines in the moody weather!

Blue Coat Teams were:

1. Jamie S, Joel L, Rio T, Sam K, Barny W, Callum M, Luis W

2. Will M, Isaac S, Jensen M, Harry M, Fin S, Josh B, Archie C.
