Leading the Way in Play

DSCN0365Our playtimes at Blue Coat are 'fine' - but that's just the problem. Children largely entertain themselves and we've identified that we should be doing more to make these times more engaging socially and physically for the children whilst injecting a big dose of fun into the mix.

This week we organised a visit from Mrs Bates to train and enroll a group of our responsible Year 5 children into the Playleaders Programme. The pupils engaged in a morning of leadership skills development before putting this into practice with our Year 1 children in Class Egypt. Onlooking midday supervisors and Mrs Arnold stood on the sidelines evaluating the children's leadership skills in order to give them feedback on their performance as they faciliated play through a series of activities with our younger pupils.

In future, these Year 5's will be on a rota programme of leading purposeful play throughout lunchtimes where children will have a choice of zones and activities within each to interact with. As midday supervisors attended the training then they will have a good understanding of the programme and will aid the Year 5's in developing their leadership skills whilst ensuring that the activities are supervised safely. We can't wait to see it in action!

A big 'thank you' to Mrs Arnold for her organisation and involvement as well as Mrs Bates for doing a first class job with our Year 5 Play Leaders. Thank you also to our attending midday supervisors for their attendance on a very cold day spent mostly outside.
