A Small Miracle

In our writing this week we have been trying to create evocative scenes using our senses and powerful adjectives.

Using Peter Collington's book, A Small Miracle, we imagined what the old lady might see, hear, smell, touch or taste outside of her caravan door.

Outside the door.............

the poor wrinkly old woman could see glitering thick snow covering the grass....Maddy T

she can feel a soft blanket layered on the stony, rocky floor......Connor U

she could see a frosty, frozen lake......She saw a dark, creepy wood. Then she heard a blood-curdling shreik....She felt a bitter chill! Then she saw a monstrous, enormous, gigantic wolf. Then there was nothing. Only darkness.........Alice M

the ancient woman could hear the creaking of a terrifying, gigantic tank rumbling in the snow like a hungry lion's belly....She could feel the snow shifting around her foot, like an adventurous explorer working his way around a rock....She could smell the scavenging, rancid rats burrowing in the bins for rotten food......Jensen M

Like a snail the old woman cowered through the blizzardly snow.....Joel L

Morgan B thinks that all the work is great. In particular he liked Alice's because of the terrifying wolf.

Wow! You have written some very powerful phrases and sentences. I shared your writing with the students in my third grade class today. First, I had them close their eyes while I read Lizzie's piece. We talked about how we could smell the smoke, feel the chill in the air, and hear the rustle of the wind in the leaves. The boys all agreed that Lizzie really evoked some creepy images with her choice of words. Then, we talked about how using powerful adjectives and senses helps the reader make a picture in their mind as they read. Next, I gave each boy a slip of paper with your writing on it. I had them read your piece quietly to themselves a couple of times so they could make pictures in their mind. Then, either using crayons, markers, or colored pencils ... or TuxPaint or SumoPaint, I had them illustrate what you wrote.
