Don't Forget...

....school term ends on Friday 15th December at 2.30pm

Tuesday at 3:42pm

We started our new topic, Making New Materials, with a variety of experiments this morning.  The children found out about acids and alkalis, made film canister rockets and used coke to blow up balloons, amongst other things.  Lots of the experiments could be repeated at home, but you will need an adult to help.

Making Indicator Fluid.

To make the indicator fluid, cut up about half a red cabbage and boil in a saucepan of water.  When the cabbage is cooked you can eat this as normal, but keep the water, which should have turned purple.  Let this cool and dilute with water.  If you put a little in a jam jar and then add a small amount liquid that you want to test the indicator will change colour depending on the acidity or alkalinity of the solution. Clear liquids will work best.

Can you remember the name of the chemical in the cabbage water that reacts to change the colour?

Make sure you have an adult to help you test any non food liquids.
