Today Egypt class visited Westonbirt Arboretum. We were very lucky with the weather and had a lovely time experiencing Autumn in such a beautiful place.

The children investigated how animals prepare for Winter and keep themselves warm. Each group were given two toy badgers with a little pot of hot water inside. They had to decide whether to keep them together or apart and find somewhere for them to stay warm. We also left a test pot in the open air. We left them for about thirty minutes. When we returned we used thermometers to test the temperatures of our pots. The pots temperatures that were hidden under leaves ranged from 20-26 degrees but the pot left in the open air was only 12 degrees. We found out that badgers coats grow thicker in Autumn and that they snuggle in their leafy, underground sets with other badgers to keep themselves warm.

The children also went on a seed hunt and using an identification sheet had to find different seeds that were growing on trees or had fallen on the ground. The children learnt to identify which trees were evergreen and which were decidious.

The children thought of lots of adjectives and descriptions, using their different senses, to describe Autumn. We will now be using these to help us write Autumnal poems.

We all had a lovely day of outdoor learning. Please ask your child what they found out.

Hi Class Egypt
What a wonderful day you had on Tuesday.
I love visiting Westonbirt - especially at this time of the year when we can see the super colours of the leaves.
