The French Saddle Pony, also known as the Poney Francais de Selle is a relatively new breed. It is bred to have the same qualitys as the British Riding Pony. The highly complicated breeding process included: Cross-breeding the Native pony mares with Welsh, New Forest, Arab and Connemara stallions, also breeding from the Merens, Basque and Landais mares and cross-breeding these with New Forest,Selle Francais and Connemara stallions.

These vertasile animals make excellent childrens ponies; They have a quiet but lively attitude and are very attractive. They have small, fine head, sutble eyesand alert ears. The neck should have a good length, nicely set shoulders with the chest deep and broad. The legs should be sturdy, well-formed joints and hard hooves. The back should be straight, the withers slim and the croup sloping with a well-set tail. The French Saddle Pony can be any colour and tend to stand between 12.2hh and 14.2hh.

Which breed next?

A) Salerno

B) Welsh

C) Welara                     I will write on the breed which gets the most votes

                                     Thank you!

Fantastic post, Charlotte. I am looking forward to finding out more about different breeds. Just to help with some of the vocabulary for those of us who don't know a lot about horses; what is a "croup" and what are "withers"?

I am going to vote for a post about the Welsh breed next.

Well done Charlotte, a great post so far. I've just realised how little I know about ponies! You've used some excellent phrases - 'sturdy, well-formed joints' and 'subtle eyes and alert ears'.

I am going to vote for a) Salerno.

I think c, partly because no one else has voted for it, but it also sounds very interesting. ( I know next to nothing about ponies!)

I think 'c', because although I have never heard of any of those ponies/horses, 'c' sounds very strange and it may turn out to be very interesting.
