Don't Forget...

....school term ends on Friday 15th December at 2.30pm

Tuesday at 3:42pm

Class New Zealand are having a heated discussion.  We watched the introduction to the film Shrek and were posed the question: is Shrek an Ogre?  The class is split, with both sides making convincing cases...

Shrek fierce

To answer this question we decided that we needed to know what an ogre is.  We used dictionaries to find a definition of an ogre and found out...

OGRE. noun. a frightening cruel giant in fairy tales/ a frightening person.

Our groups then gathered evidence to persuade the other members of the class that he is, or is not an ogre.  We put the arguments in order, to find the most convincing reasons and used powerful adjectives to make our point of view even more compelling (The revolting creature showers in mud!)

So, what do you think?  Is Shrek an ogre or not?  What do you think is the best argument to persuade other people that you are correct?  Don't forget to use powerful adjectives.

I think that the best arguement to persuade others that Shrek is an ogre is that he brushes his teeth with revolting, pasted bugs. Also, he baths in a disgusting lake as well as showering in thick, squelchy mud.

I agree that shrek is an ogre because he made an BEWARE OGRE sign. In addition to that he lives in a truly revolting, slug-infested swamp.

odd ears and pale green face.

I think Shrek is an ogre because the villagers are scared of him plus he bathes in mud.

Some good arguments with powerful adjectives to persuade people to agree with you. Well done to Oliver M for including the connective "plus", part of our word level layered targets. I wonder if anyone can use a silver target connective phrase?

Shrek is an ogre because he has peculiar ears in addition to a very wide mouth. He also calls himself an ogre, which I don't think he would do unless he thought it was true.

Shrek is not an ogre because he has many friends in addition to this he has a girlfriend, plus he is always smiling, happy and jolly jumping around his home like a five year old on Christmas.

Shrek is not a real ogre because he didn't eat his babies, instead he changed their nappies and bounced them on his knee. Therefore I think he looks like an ogre but is not cruel like an ogre.

Denny, you have given your opinion and backed it up with the following sentences. Furthermore, you have used connectives to develop your argument (therefore). I am tickled pink with your persuasion.

I think Shrek isn't an ogre because he isn't scary or grizzly and after a while he turns nice and also the villagers like him in one of the films! He rescued Fiona and they fall in love aswell! :-)
Comment 14 Comment by Grace on 09 Sep 12 at 7:43pm | Quote this comment
I think Shrek is not an ogre because he adores his three children and his wife, in addition to this he is caring and thoughtful towards his friends. These are not normally characteristics you think of when you think of an ogre.
:-)

Shrek must be an ogre because at the start of the film, he paints a sign that says 'beware ogre'. All humans are different so all ogres must be different too and that means that he's not necessarily bad. So it doesn't matter if he's an ogre or not. ;-)

I think that Shrek is an Ogre for many reasons including the fact that he bathes in disgusting, sludgy mud! Furthermore he cleans his mouldy teeth with revolting, slimy bugs. Therefore he must be an Ogre, although not necessarily a cruel one.

Shrek is not an ogre because he saves princes Fiona from the dragon furthermore he didn't kill the dragon even though the dragon was trying to kill him.The king more like an ogre than shrek. ;-)

Sarah, you have given a very strong argument that the King is the real ogre.

I think that shrek is an ogre. He brushes his slimy yellow teeth with repugnant bugs. Also he showers in thick squelchy mud futhermore he is green and his face is rather odd looking with his long ears and massive nose. Therefore he must truly be an ogre.
Comment 23 Comment by Teya Q on 12 Sep 12 at 6:29pm | Quote this comment
I strongly believe that shrek is an ogre because of his most disgusting habits for example: he brushes his teeth with pasted bugs on a stick, showers in thick oozy mud and rudely passes wind which suffocates the fish for him to eat.

I think Shrek is an ogre as he brushes his teeth with bugs in addition to bathing in mud. Shrek IS an ogre.
